This Saturday, the Life is Living Festival returns for a FREE celebration of Oakland. This is a people-powered, community-coordinated effort to model a more sustainable, compassionate, creative and just world for all. It is reflective of the beauty, struggle and spirit of our communities. Come dream, dance, create and play! Learn more about what to expect:

1. CAL SHAKES THEATER STAGE | FUTURISM: AFROS & BEYOND

Cal Shakes and Youth Speaks are teaming up to curate a theater stage celebrating FUTURISM: AFROS & BEYOND. With a pulsing through-line spun by DJ Slum B & MC’d by Lisa Evans, we’re featuring a mixtape of local artists conjuring liberatory futures through word, music, and movement.

2. THE CRUCIBLE | ENTER A RAFFLE TO WIN A KIDS BIKE
Be sure to check out The Crucible for a chance to win these dope wheels! In addition, The Crucible will be hosting *free* hands-on activities like copper stamping and leather cuff making AND a kids’ bike raffle. You don’t want to miss this interactive, all ages experience.
3. MARKETPLACE | SUPPORT YOUR LOCAL OAKLAND ENTREPRENEUR
With holiday season around the corner, we got you covered with a Marketplace filled with local vendors selling handcrafted jewelry, artisanal soaps, essential oils, apparel, textiles and much more. Support your local Oakland entrepreneurs, creatives and makers!

Youth Speaks presents the 9th Annual Life Is Living tomorrow in DeFremery Park, Oakland (Adeline between 16th & 18th Streets).  The festival is free and runs from 10AM- 7PM.  The event features music, dance, spoken word performances, djs, food, health information,  and activities for kids.  This year, they are honoring the legacy of the Black Panther Party.  Free breakfast is at 10AM.  The Coup will be performing at 5pm.  More details are here.

LIL-2014-Kickoff

Life is Living kicks off tonight with a conversation about the role of Hip Hop in fostering social movements.

There is a full day of events planned for tomorrow featuring a free breakfast from 10am-12pm, a kid’s zone, theNaked Beauty Zone, African Dance classes, Reflections of Healing Mural Project, a marketplace as well as performance from local artists.

This year’s main stage includes featured performances by: Amir Sulaiman, Young Gifted and Black, DJ Rashida; Kev Choice; 1 OAK; Netta B; Jennifer Johns; Antique; Ryan Nicole; Shock G of Digital Underground; Humpty Hump; DJ NuStylez; Peewee.
